Preventive Measures
Hazardous substances are drugs that are toxic chemicals such as ingredients, and constitute a health risk when exposed. Health risk is defined as a chemical for which statistically significant evidence based on at least one study conducted in accordance with established scientific principles, acute or chronic health effects may occur in exposed workers. It contains chemicals that are carcinogenic, toxic or highly toxic agents, reproductive toxins, irritants, Corrosive, sensitizers, and agents that affect the target organs.
ASHP and OSHA have proposed specific criteria for determining the drug should be considered dangerous and programs for safe operation. According to them, any drug, carcinogenic, teratogenic, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, organ toxicity at low doses, genotoxicity, part of the list of those medicines. Moreover, each new drug has the structure and the toxicity profile similar to those standards, are considered hazardous.
However, safe handling guidelines states that any regulation, health care, you must create your own list of hazardous substances based on specific criteria and following instructions. When drugs are purchased for the first time must be evaluated to determine whether they should be listed in the installation of hazardous substances. Since the use and number of these drugs increases, so that health care worker exposure potential. Investigational drugs should be evaluated according to information provided to the Principal Investigator. If the information is insufficient to make an informed decision to study medicine should be considered hazardous until more information is available.
A key element of the safety program for the treatment of these medicines have Material Safety Data Sheet (IAS). Employers should have available MSDS for all hazardous agents at work. A comprehensive security program should include a process for monitoring and updating of the database with IAS. When purchasing dangerous drugs for the first time, an MSDS must be obtained from the manufacturer or distributor. To IAS should determine the appropriate precautions for handling, including safety equipment, supervision and management related to leakage of drugs. Many MSDSs are available online through the manufacturer or special intelligence security.
